Alaska’s Mt. Redoubt Volcano Erupts, Reminds World of the Many Ways We’re All Totally Screwed

Redoubt's 1990 eruption after being snubbed by Arsenio Hall
Been focused on the global economic meltdown over the past many months? Been busy watching the value sucked out of your 401k and your prospects for retirement morph from visions of crystal blue waters and tee times into the dull navy shade of a Wal-Mart uniform and clean-ups in aisle six?
We can’t blame you, but apparently the planet is getting a little jealous of all the attention the economy has been receiving lately, so last night it fired off a few warning shots from Alaska’s Mount Redoubt Volcano near Anchorage.
We have to admit, the barrage of impressively depressing economic news did make us forget that the planet has been actively melting down for a while now too. When a number of southern ski areas failed to open this year for lack of snow, global warming didn’t even enter our minds, we were far more concerned about what it would meaning for the already ailing tourism sector.
Apparently, the Earth has been deliberating blowing its top for several weeks now – volcanic activity around the mountain increased beginning in January, and the final straw came when Planet Earth was bumped from a scheduled appearance on 60 Minutes so producers could extend an interview with Ben Bernanke. Adding insult to injury, and pushing the Ring of Fire over the edge, the planet was also allegedly scheduled to appear on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart on the night of Jim Cramer showdown.
So what can we learn from this? Can we commit to never again neglect our ailing planet? Can we….. Oh wait, hold on – Geithner’s unveiling his new bank rescue plan right now. Everyone wait right here, we’ll get back to this in a minute…..
The Associated Press: Alaska volcano Mount Redoubt erupts 4 times.
